Working with the principles of Ashtanga Yoga, each class will emphasize the linking of postures with breath using the primary and intermediate series as a foundation for sequences. Ashtanga Yoga literally translates to, "eight limbed" yoga. The eight limbs are Yama (self restraint), Niyama (personal observances), Asana (seat or posture), Pranayama (development of energy), Pratyahara (withdrawal of the mind), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (enlightenment). The starting point for any asana practice is the breath, and for Ashtanga Yoga the starting point of the breath is ujjayi pranayama. Ujjayi pranayama is the cultivation of a victorious flow of life force, hidden energy or wind in the body. It is through the breath that the mind and body are transformed in the practice. As the revered master teacher of Ashtanga Yoga, Sri Krisna Pattabhi Jois famously states, "Practice, and all is coming !" All levels are welcome unless otherwise specified in the individual class descriptions.
