description
90 Minute Practice: Juggling the flaming torches of the Pitta Dosha We begin with cooling pranayama practices to reduce excess heat in the body and then compassionately explore a slow vinyasa practice that aims to create balance in the central core of the body, the seat of pitta with postures in a variety of positions that strengthen and open without overheating. For the fiery pitta who needs challenge, we flow through twisting balancing postures connecting feet to the earth. While this practice may at times be warming, its slow pace and use of cooling breath practices walks the Middle Path.

Thank you so much for this class and for the Pitta lecture preceding it. The cooling pranayama was new to me but I used it throughout the class and really felt a positive, cooling effect. I am wondering, however, about how to modify this practice when I'm on my period. For example, is it appropriate to do the long hold in bridge pose when on the first few "heavy flow" days and, if not, what is an alternative, cooling pose? Thank you again!

Love your languaging! Hope I can become a teacher as good as you someday!
Question: Would this be a good practice to do if my pitta is low? I realize the breathing may need to be altered, but would the asanas help that imbalance?
    Thanks.

    Dear Sharon,
Glad to hear that the imagery of fire and fluidity helped your practice. I'm working on a suggested reading list as well as my own book on Ayurveda.

To answer your request for yogaglo's listing of Ayurveda classes, we've been trying to organize them to make them more visible. The foundational segments we filmed can be seen here: http://www.yogaglo.com/blog/2011/04/weaving-ayurveda-into-your-yoga-practice/

and Yogaglo has created an Ayurveda category: http://www.yogaglo.com/video-Category-42-Ayurveda.html

you'll be glad to hear we filmed some more themed Ayurveda classes just last week!

Hope you're feeling better after the practice.

Felicia--I enjoyed this so much! I was feeling very tired this morning and a little sore, so I think this was the perfect practice--I visualized that the fire was all the aches and pains, and I wanted to keep them at bay.....the fluidity you spoke of helped with the transitions where I was feeling more stiff than usual :-) I wish Yogaglo had a listing of classes that used Ayurveda so I could find them more easily! Could you please recommend some books on Ayruveda? Thank you thank you!!

    Dear Ariana
Thanks for the comments! Wow! Sounds like this class was quite an experience for you. How great that so many images came through for you--talk about the sacred fire.
I sent an email to the rest of the team to ask why you can't add this to your favorites, so we'll try to find out for you.
    We'll be adding more Ayurvedically-themed classes--stay tuned.
Oh, glad you enjoyed the humor, too!
    Best wishes,
    Felicia

Kelly, Glad you enjoyed the practice. I have a lot of pitta myself, so I find that the breath can be completely helpful to reduce irritation. I'm so happy that you like the instruction of water moving through water. I learned that from a Tibetan teacher years ago when I did an intensive of ultra-slow-motion yoga, but I found it amazingly helpful.

We are definitely planning more future Ayurveda classes! Stay tuned.

i was so excited for this class to be posted. it was great. the new breathwork helped me melt further into poses that i typically get a little irritated in. i LOVED being reminded to "flow like water in water." it felt so right, and smooth when i moved like water. thank you! i feel that i will bring that into many more of my practices. looking forward to seeing kapha! (and i thought the music was fine) i really hope to see more ayurveda classes in the future. =)

Thanks Cathy! Glad you enjoyed it. Appreciate your feedback about the music. If you've watched any of my other online classes, you'll notice that I rarely use music, so I had the volume too low perhaps. I'm planning to start using music more often and I'll turn it up! I'm also planning to explore more concepts of Ayurveda in my ongoing classes and we're planning more of these special classes.
