I can't tell you how immediately better I feel from this. Super super grateful to have found this practice today and am intending to make this class a regular part of my at home yoga practice

  • Susan Johnson     Apr 20th, 2014
I come to this class again and again for upper body relief. The sequencing is perfect and I'm so grateful to you for this and all your other wonderful classes. I plan to teach something similar at an upcoming outdoor yoga event with no wall space and am trying to figure out a way to do the wall twists without a wall. Any suggestions? Partner work maybe?
    • Jason Crandell     Apr 20th, 2014
Susan - Glad this helps. It's tough to reproduce the opening without a wall--maybe parter work. Maybe a tree?!
  • Sally Bradley     Apr 8th, 2014
    Exactly what I needed..thank you!!
    • Jason Crandell     Apr 9th, 2014

      ;) thanks Fizle
  • Christene Jennings     Jan 15th, 2014
Thanks, Jason. This practice offered glorious relief. I will return to this again and again to counteract daily computer use. A question: During 90-degree hand positioning of the wall stretches, I felt some numbness in the hands. Is this normal? I backed off to about a 45-degree position each time I felt my hand go numb.
    • Jason Crandell     Jan 15th, 2014
Thanks, Christene! I'm not sure if this numbness or common, but it's not desirable. It seems to me like you modified it correctly!
  • Eden Blackwell     Jan 13th, 2014
My shoulders were tense enough to swallow my head until THIS practice! So grateful. Thanks, Jason!

  • Chen Jacobson     Oct 28th, 2013
I'm so glad that I stumbled upon this video! My neck and shoulder were so stiff after a week of long hours of sitting in front of the computer and traveling and it hurt to even turn my head to the side. I can't believe how much relief this 60-minute practice just gave me. Jason is so knowledgeable in yoga anatomy and offers many highly effective poses in this video. Namaste.
    • Jason Crandell     Oct 28th, 2013
Chen- thank you! I'm glad this offered some relief.
  • Frauke Greil     Oct 27th, 2013
I didn't even know how stiff I was up there, thank you!

In the lunges on the knee my knee hurts. This only happens in those lunge-on-knee yoga poses, otherwise I have no knee problems at all. Can you recommend a class/ tutorial addressing this?

Much love, will do this class again. And again :)
    • Jason Crandell     Oct 28th, 2013
Frauke - Thanks for practicing with me! With regards to low lunges, first make sure to pad your knee enough. Use as a folded blanket. If that doesn't work, you can just do high-lunges instead. Good luck!
  • Amy Eschtruth     Oct 23rd, 2013
I am going to have my high school yoga class do this today. They are always complaining of upper back tension due to sitting in a desk all day, at a computer, poor posture, etc. I loved this flow. Thank you so much.
    • Jason Crandell     Oct 23rd, 2013
Hi Amy- I'm thrilled to hear you'll be sharing this with your class. Thanks for practicing.

I'm glad to hear it! Thanks Liz.
  • Emma Hamilton     Sep 12th, 2013
My shoulders thank you! Every other movement practise I have been doing of late as unintentionally exacerbated my neck and shoulder pain, so glad I have found this class.

Glad your shoulders enjoyed this! Thanks Emma.

      Thanks Jennifer!
  • Jennifer Jennifer     Aug 23rd, 2013
This is fabulous! I've been doing the shorter "Practice for Shoulders, Neck and Upper Back", but this one is an amazing practice for those of us with shoulders that do a lot.

      Thanks Jennifer.

  • Courtney K     Aug 8th, 2013
Jason, I've been a fan of yours since your first Yoga Journal podcast. Your anatomical knowledge is staggering and your cues are really helpful in understanding where I need to be in each asana. Thanks for a wonderful practice.

  • Keely Chaisson     Jul 29th, 2013
I have so much trouble with tension in this area... it's particularly bad when I'm really stressed or when I'm spending excessive hours at the computer, and when it's at its worst I have muscle spasms in my neck. Before I discovered that yoga was waay better, my doctor had prescribed physical therapy and occasionally muscle relaxants. I'm now pretty good about getting in yoga most days to keep the problem at bay, but every now and then it still gets uncomfortably tight. This is the BEST yoga class I have ever done for tension in this area. Thank you so much.
    • Laura Johnson     Jul 30th, 2013
I second your post Keely. Describes my situation exactly.
    • Jason Crandell     Jul 30th, 2013
Keely, I'm thrilled to hear this helps relieve tension for you! Thanks for practicing.
  • Kate Anderson     Jul 29th, 2013
The difference of how my shoulders/neck feel from start to finish on this one is pretty amazing. Great practice, thank you.
    • Jason Crandell     Jul 30th, 2013
I'm thrilled this worked well for you. Thanks Kate.
  • Dimitri Delazanos     Jul 21st, 2013
"... I call it the pose where the arms are reaching real far forward and your hips are going back, that's like child's pose but not." Cracks me up every time! You're hilarious. I could do this practice every day, and come close sometimes! Thanks again.
    • Jason Crandell     Jul 22nd, 2013
Thanks Dimitri! Glad my humor comes through.
  • Tina Tina     Jul 14th, 2013
Wow was just what I needed. Will incorporate some of those awesome twists into vinyasa practice. Thank you so so much!
    • Jason Crandell     Jul 21st, 2013
Tina Tina - I would love to, but, honestly, taking the time to go to the wall during a vinyasa practice can be a little challenging. Let me digest it and figure out if I can do it right!
  • Janelle Chapman     Jul 11th, 2013
    Ahhh, relief! Thank you!!
    • Jason Crandell     Jul 11th, 2013
happy you enjoyed it, thanks Janelle.
  • Jessica Raymond     Jun 20th, 2013
Thanks Jason. It was exactly what I've been needing. I especially loved the wide-legged forward fold with the clasping of the shins. Felt so great. Thanks again!
  • Melanie Baur     Jun 14th, 2013
Still pretty new here at Yogaglo but I find myself gravitating towards your classes. I love your teaching style and feel that every class I take of yours is just the right amount of work. This was a phenomenal stretch for a really tight area for me. Thank you, again, for a great class!
    • Jason Crandell     Jun 15th, 2013
Melanie- thank you very much. I'm glad these classes feel like the right amount of work. Best.

  • Heather Wininger     May 9th, 2013
jason, you are an amazing teacher. i always find myself choosing your classes. i can't wait to share this specific practice with my husband, who is very tight in these areas. i completely agree with loosening tension before opening the heart.
    • Jason Crandell     May 9th, 2013
      Thank you very much Heather!
  • jean scott     May 4th, 2013
    Hi Jason,
I had the pleasure of attending your workshops at Moksha in Chicago a few months ago and now rely on your work on Yogaglo. I teach yoga in a corporate setting, and your level 1-2 offerings are invaluable to me as I design classes. I hope you will add more level 1 for me to draw upon for shoulders, neck and back. In addition, I would like to add that your teaching is truly unique and exceptional. I really appreciate and respect your ability to teach each pose with simple, intelligent alignment instruction so a practice can be safe and skillful. I am learning a lot from you and thank you for sharing your gifts on Yogaglo.
    Jean in WI
    • Jason Crandell     May 5th, 2013
Hi Jean, thanks for practicing with me here and at Moksha! I will add your request to my list. I'm happy that these help to inspire your teaching. many thanks
  • Kimberley Anderson     Apr 23rd, 2013
Jason i like this class and unwind deep seated psoas tension class. Do you have any other classes that are similar with a little more flow or heat building? Thanks
    • Jason Crandell     Apr 23rd, 2013
Good question - I find that psoas releasing works best in my body during longer, slower, deeper practices. That said, because this region of my body is pretty tight, I integrate it in the majority of my sequences. So, I can't think of any vinyasa-based class of mine that focuses on the region, but all of them include the region. Sounds like it's time to create one for you!
  • Daniela Widera     Apr 20th, 2013
    Thank you Jason!

I really needed this! Great class, as always!

I love your calm, collected and grounded energy, and your intelligent guidance.

      Thanks Alexandra!
  • Brittany Mott     Apr 16th, 2013
I need a class like this every day. SO tense in the shoulders. "I call this 'reaching the arms forward really far kind of like child's pose but keeping the hips up pose'" hahahaha Thanks Jason. You've got a way with getting into the different aspects of poses.
    • Jason Crandell     Apr 16th, 2013
      Thanks Brittany!

  • Alison Robertson     Jan 7th, 2013
This class has worked miracles on my upper back and shoulders which seized up completely over New Year when I took a few days off from my mat (I have a bad scoliosis which gets less tolerant of lack of movement as time goes by). The stretches are delicious and the instructions very clear. This is definitely going to be a regular maintenance class for me. Many thanks for your wonderful classes Jason. Best wishes for 2013! Alison

  • Danielle Nolles     Jan 3rd, 2013
Hello Jason, and thank you for this fascinating class. You've given me lots of great ideas for opening my shoulders, things I would never have thought of on my own! Your instructions are perfect, easy to follow, I can almost follow you with my eyes closed. When people ask me who I study yoga with, I mention your name, even though you have no idea I'm one of your many students! Hopefully someday I'll be able to take a class with you "live"! Happy New Year!
    Danielle (from France)

Lots of built up tension in my neck and upper back...this was exactly what I needed today! The twists at the wall were wonderful, as you said, I felt my whole upper body release and with each twist found more space to open into. Thank you for another glorious practice...Namaste Jason:)

  • Natasha Palmisano     Nov 7th, 2012
This practice was amazing. I have a one month old and I've noticed that from holding my baby I've started hunching my shoulders. I will definitely be doing this practice several times a week. Even if I don't have time for the entire class, even 20 minutes will help I'm sure!
    • Jason Crandell     Nov 7th, 2012
Wow... You have a one-month old and you've already practiced!!?!??? Nice work--even more, congratulations!
  • Kathy Sloan     Nov 4th, 2012
Loved this class. I felt the tension release in my back/shoulders for the first time. One observation I had was how much tension I also have in my sides. When doing the side stretchs I felt that release too..AHHHH. Thanks again, I will use this class often!
    • Jason Crandell     Nov 4th, 2012
Kathy - I can relate to the tightness you're referencing to in the side body that you didn't know you had. Glad this helped create release.
  • Maggie Swetkoff     Nov 3rd, 2012
I've been doing yoga for 40 years. Never have I experienced such a great shoulder, upper back and neck stretch. I have tons of issues with my neck and shoulders. You obviously are very keyed into those of us who have restrictions. Yet you offer great alternatives. Thank you so much. Loved the class. Will be taking more of your offerings. Peace
    • Jason Crandell     Nov 4th, 2012
Wow Maggie, how great that you've had a committed practice. Glad you enjoyed this. Thanks for the comment!

Jason, I am new to the yogaglo site and joined to get some fresh ideas for my practice and classes. I have been teaching vinyasa for 14 years and Yin for 8 years AND yet I as I watched your practice I found myself saying out loud "this is brilliant". I appreciate your pragmatic, grounded, and humorous approach and so far you are the one teacher I have the most interest in following their offerings. Best to you!

Wow, thank you SO MUCH. After a boxing match that didn't go my way (read: a nasty hit to the throat, ouch!), I have been all kinds of kinked up in my neck and shoulders for WEEKS. That brilliant bit you did with the twists against the wall was EXACTLY what I (and my poor shoulders) needed!
I love all of your videos and practice them frequently. You have given me so many solutions to difficult physical issues - and sometimes emotional ones, too. Thank you for all the work you do!
