Head to Toe: Neck

Yin | By Felicia Tomasko on Jul 20 2012
Part one of a full-body head to toe series. This one: releasing tension from the neck. The muscles of our jaw are some of the strongest in the body for their size. When they become tight, then everything in the upper part of the spine tightens, our stress levels increase, and the neck becomes even tighter. This sequence uses two blocks and a variety of poses in different positions to release the pent-up tightness in the neck. From supported backbends to creative arm and shoulder twists, to full body twists before ending in bridge with a block to create a sense of traction in the neck, this practice may have you feeling like you have the long and supple neck of a giraffe by savasana.

Just what my neck needed today! I have a quick question....in a lot of the postures you say "drop the chin". I just want to clarify if you mean drop the chin to the chest in the direction of the floor (where I think gravity would take you0? I have a really sensitive neck and making sure I am doing it correctly is key and I know those two actions are very different for the neck. Thank you!

Your choices of music are always so suitable and easy to slip into during class. It's easy to see that you put a careful effort into conveying the proper mood. Much appreciated!

Dear Sarah, Thanks for your kind feedback. I'm happy to hear that the music choices are working for you (I have fun conceptualizing and combining the tunes with the poses). Glad the mood works for you! Thank you for the note! Namaste, Felicia

Due to an injury and an 85 year old parent who had a medical emergency I've been gone from YogaGlo for 2 months. Today was my first class again and still hands down my favorite class of all. This was a wonderful way to start back up. THANK YOU Felicia. LOVE YOUR classes.

I also enjoy the chanting in classe. I used to go to a studio devoted to ayurveda and we spent 10-15 minutes in class with chant and occasional kirtan. I miss it very much. Your chants in class are a joy to my soul. Namaste.

  • D Schiller     Jul 29th, 2013
What is the chant at the end of class?
    • Felicia Tomasko     Aug 4th, 2013
Dear D, the chant that I am singing at the end of Savasana is called the Gayatri Mantra. It is believed to be an auspicious mantra that is said to contain all of the other mantras within it. The Gayatri Mantra appears in many forms within the texts and traditions, beginning in the Rig Veda, the oldest of the poetic sacred texts from India. One of the things I love about this particular chant is that it begins with an invocation to the earth, the skies, the heavens, and places us in that point of connection with the universe around us. It also asks that in our silence, may we experience our own true nature. it evokes the energy of the life-affirming and life-giving sun. It energizes and balances us. May you be energized and balanced, Felicia

  • Nadia Rqm     Jan 25th, 2013
hi felicia. as usual I gravitate to your shoulder and neck sessions. My neck and shoulder have been pretty sore for the past few days with me moving out of country for work, I get to tight and stiff. Thanks to your side stretches and the long forward bend, my neck is less stiff. I think the key is to also make breathing a part of the exercise. I focused on breathing in and out deeply. That helped. Thanks!
    • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 25th, 2013
Dear Nadia, yes, part of the key is making the breathing an important and vital and essential part of the exercise. This is especially important in these long forward folds-- or in anything that is designed to open up the body.

I'm glad to hear that these neck and shoulder sections are helpful for you. It's amazing what can get stuck and how we can become tight and stiff. Movement is good medicine and I'm happy to know that you're using the movement in this way.

Come back to this practice again whenever you need it. Thank you!! Felicia
  • Kristin Londergan     Dec 29th, 2012
What a wonderful practice! Thank you so much, Felicia! I have a lot of issues with my neck and throat, so this was a big help. Your teaching style really speaks to me and I am very grateful I am able to take your classes even though I'm all the way in Indiana. I would really love it if you would consider doing a class for the muscles of the face or for sinus relief if you ever feel so compelled. Thank you again! Namaste (:

  • Katie Atkinson     Oct 30th, 2012
Felicia- I always look forward to your practices, so thank you so much for all that you do. I have a question; I have incredibly weak, constricted neck and hips along with TMJ. Much of what you talked about at the very beginning of practice is what I experience. When doing bridge w/ block (at the lowest level) it often causes discomfort in my neck and hips. Sometimes even doing a lot of positions on my back tends to make my neck feel as though it's constricted. Any thoughts would be wonderful.
    Namaste! :)
  • Melissa Stern     Oct 2nd, 2012
Thank you for this wonderful practice - I will be incorporating some of these stretches into my own classes. My students will be so grateful!

Ive been wanting to purchase an hour massage for the longest time. But since its not a necessity, I've never gotten one. Thanks for allowing me to save a little money. My neck feels great after this hour. Do you have any tips for putting more weight in my forearms when doing poses such as sphinx? All my weight is my elbows.

Ohhh, thank you for this beautiful practice. I had started out looking for a yin class to follow a challenging Vinyasa practice last night but was drawn to this one. Thank goodness! I have also forwarded this class to my therapist who works with trauma patients. I think it would be very helpful. (She's a yoga fan, too).

And it's amazing how quickly our tension and tightness can collect here. We need these practices to unlock this art of the body. I hop you have the opportunity to retun to this practice again! Felicia
