Menses Sequence for Ashtanga Yogis

Restorative | By Jodi Blumstein on Jul 03 2012
Ashtanga yoga is meant to be practiced consistently - 6 days a week. It is traditional to take the 2 moon days off each month as well, and for women the first days of their menstrual cycle. During these rest days its nice to do a restorative practice (we always feel better when we do something!) This sequence is designed specifically for this time, and will leave you feeling re-energized and your hips and back open. You need many props for this - but not all are absolutely necessary. A blanket, strap - 2 - 3 blocks, and if you have a chair or back-bending whale bench this is a bonus.

Loved it! Thanks Jodi. We needed a women's practice on Yoga Glo. How funny that it came from an Ashtanga teacher!

My lower back is surprisingly open. This practice felt like a 90 minute vacation. I'm sure I could do this all day. Thank you much!

As an old ashtangi it was on the days "off" that I discovered Iyengar Restoratives, through that I worked more on alignment principals of Iyengar that helped my ashtanga practice. This sequence is great for those who practice ashtanga, BUT would have been so much more helpful + beneficial with the many tips of props from an IYENGAR teacher. Happy to see Jodi introducing this "style" to her students, but it's like having an Iyengar teacher teaching the primary series. Thus have an Iyengar teacher teaching restoratives with props. Teach what you know...really, really know.
