Kick Up Tutorial

Vinyasa Flow | By Dice Iida-Klein on Jul 11 2012
Kicking up into handstand is one thing, but truly kicking up with control both on your ascent and descent into handstand another. This short tutorial uses a blanket and a block and teaches yogis how to kick up into handstand with control, moving from the core center. With a block between our legs and sliding the blanket back and forth to our mat, we start to engage the belly in ways we never thought possible. From toe tips to finger tips we find full engagement. Fly on my fellow yogis!

Eureka! You just switch the light on...really good breakdown. It makes total sense. Esp. the kicking/sliding /bending the non-kicking leg. THANK YOU!!!
    • Dice Iida-Klein     Jan 7th, 2014
You're welcome Amanda! Glad it could all make sense :)
  • Ariele Stromberg     Nov 1st, 2013
Super helpful and fun, like all your classes! Thinking about moving the blanket forward when kicking up was eye opening. Thanks, Dice!

  • Max Novelli     Oct 31st, 2013
    Great tutorial!!
What would you suggest for somebody (aka me) who feels that his shoulders are not strong enough to press or hold the hand stand?
    • Dice Iida-Klein     Jan 7th, 2014
Hey Max! I would recommend working your downdogs, planks and chaturangas a little more carefully...meaning hold those poses for longer periods of time than you normally do. Other options are to hold and "L" at the wall. Feet against the wall, hands on the ground. Make sure your hips and shoulders end up over your wrists.

In the past five days I have taken 5 of your practices and I'm hooked!!! Not only have I learned so much, I have worked the hardest I ever have in a yoga practice. From strength to flexibility to really calling on specific muscles to initiate movement - it's all there in your practices - thank you Dice and thank you YogaGlo
    • Dice Iida-Klein     Oct 28th, 2013
From the bottom of my heart and the GLO's...you're welcome Haley! Glad you're enjoying the practices with me :) Come on back for more!

  • Hannah Abbruzzese     Jul 1st, 2013
I really like the trick of kicking the standing leg foward to get up into handstand. I am very flexible in my low back and although half the time I can catch the handstand with a regular kick up, I feel like its a gamble if whether or not ill flip over- hence fear becoming my biggest obstacle in getting handstand in the middle of the room. I feel so much more control with this trick. Thank you!
    • Dice Iida-Klein     Jul 22nd, 2013
You're welcome Hannah. That kick trick will definitely help someone more flexible to sustain their handstand a little longer than normal!
  • Jennifer Jennifer     Jun 23rd, 2013
Love all of this. Especially helpful was the reference to bringing the blanket towards the hands in single leg kick up. So powerful!
    • Dice Iida-Klein     Jun 26th, 2013
Glad you enjoyed the practice Jennifer! I love using the blanket for handstands. Makes you feel the kick up :)
  • Sahar Melhem     Jun 8th, 2013

  • Kristen C     Apr 20th, 2013
Dice, thank you so much for fulfilling someone's request because this truly helped my handstand practice. I feel like I'm extremely close to staying up and balance but I'm missing that little piece to keep me up. I do constantly kick up sometimes too much which either makes me fall back or my core isn't engaged enough to stay up. Thank you again!
    • Dice Iida-Klein     Apr 24th, 2013
You're welcome Kristen! Glad this practice helped you out :)
  • wei F     Apr 18th, 2013
Dice, I have to say this is missing puzzle piece for my HS practice. I have tried many different ways for one leg kick up HS, but have never thought the bottom feet has to pull forward to engage the pelvic and core stabilizer, this is amazing instruction, and I got my Ah Ha moment the first time for one leg kick HS. 10 years of practice and 5 years of teaching, this is where I am today. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!
    • Dice Iida-Klein     Apr 24th, 2013
I LOVE the AH HA moments. Glad this class helped you get there Wei!

      Namaste Mia :)
  • Christine Morris      Dec 5th, 2012
Ok, I love this too. And, I can get up, but not balance away from the wall. Is there alignment that you can cue me on?
    • Dice Iida-Klein     Feb 22nd, 2013
Try engaging your core center, by drawing the navel in and softening your upper ribs into your back body. Being core-centered/focused will help to find your balance. The balance comes from the center and expands outward :)
  • Sarah Coleman     Oct 28th, 2012
awesome tips here. I strive to keep get there and this helps me become more focused in my practise. Just wondering how I should be breathing? I know there is a tendency to hold your breath.
    • Dice Iida-Klein     Feb 22nd, 2013
Yes... there is a tendency to hold the breath. Try exhaling upon the kickup. It will help to contract the front body, but don't forget to inhale once you are upside down and continue to the best of your ability to breathe normally.
  • sarah sandoval     Oct 18th, 2012
This tutorial was so extremely helpful. I love the tip about thinking about drawing the bottom leg in versus away from the body. You are truly a gifted teacher...thank you for sharing your gift! Peace!!!
