Kick Up Tutorial

Kicking up into handstand is one thing, but truly kicking up with control both on your ascent and descent into handstand another. This short tutorial uses a blanket and a block and teaches yogis how to kick up into handstand with control, moving from the core center. With a block between our legs and sliding the blanket back and forth to our mat, we start to engage the belly in ways we never thought possible. From toe tips to finger tips we find full engagement.     Dice, thank you so much for fulfilling someone's request because this truly helped my handstand practice. I feel like I'm extremely close to staying up and balance but I'm missing that little piece to keep me up. I do constantly kick up sometimes too much which either makes me fall back or my core isn't engaged enough to stay up. Thank you again!

    Dice, I have to say this is missing puzzle piece for my HS practice. I have tried many different ways for one leg kick up HS, but have never thought the bottom feet has to pull forward to engage the pelvic and core stabilizer, this is amazing instruction, and I got my Ah Ha moment the first time for one leg kick HS. 10 years of practice and 5 years of teaching, this is where I am today. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!

    you are the most amazing teacher. engaging the backbend while elevated in the handstand helped me stay in place for at least 20 seconds!! YAY!

    Ok, I love this too. And, I can get up, but not balance away from the wall. Is there alignment that you can cue me on?

      Try engaging your core center, by drawing the navel in and softening your upper ribs into your back body. Being core-centered/focused will help to find your balance. The balance comes from the center and expands outward :)

    awesome tips here. I strive to keep get there and this helps me become more focused in my practise. Just wondering how I should be breathing? I know there is a tendency to hold your breath.

      Yes... there is a tendency to hold the breath. Try exhaling upon the kickup. It will help to contract the front body, but don't forget to inhale once you are upside down and continue to the best of your ability to breathe normally.
