Full-Circumference Hip Opening

Vinyasa Flow | By Jason Crandell on Feb 10 2012
Dedicated to opening the full-circumference of the hip-joints, this class will leave your hips feeling clear, spacious and balanced. So often, “hip-opening” practices focus on the back and outer-hips while neglecting the front and inner-compartments of the hips. Instead, this balanced practice is full of lunges, standing poses, and other hip-opening postures that will dig deep into your hip-flexors and adductors as well as the outer and back portions of your hips. This is Jason’s most complete hip-opening practice to date on yogaglo!

Another amazing practice. Somehow your level 2 practices get me deeper than any level 3 practices to date.... hmmm... something to think about.

      ;) glad to hear that
  • Kathryn Leonard Friedman     Jul 31st, 2014
This is exactly what I needed. I did this practice over two years ago, and remembered it. I constantly have tight, tired piriformis and gluteus medius from biking and running. That last pose that you created (figure four on the side) was the best! Thank you so much!

As a teacher, I am looking to not only practice via Yogaglo videos, but also to learn something new that I can use in my classes. Jason never disappoints! I so appreciate his pacing and thoroughness. My favorite Yogaglo teacher. Thanks Jason!
    • Jason Crandell     Jun 19th, 2014
      Thank you Marianne.
  • Shruti Saran     May 20th, 2014
great class! I wasn't sure starting out, but totally sold by the end. I have very tight hips and am trying to focus on all the hip opening by doing some dedicated stretching every day. This is a very smart approach and I will definitely be coming back when I have a full hour. I like your playful, experimental, and iterative approach to yoga, and definitely felt stretches in some new places. It's also nice to see progress during the class itself, and every downward dog felt better, every forward bend...this was truly a great class with great instruction. thank you.

      Thanks Shruti!
  • Cristine Schilling     May 11th, 2014
Sweet Love!! That was an awesome practice! I often feel that hip-opening classes are incomplete but you really worked the full range and brought it. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that thread the needle tipped to the side. It got into some places that really needed it. Your queues are fantastic as well. Really aware. It's apparent that you have a personal practice that is exploratory and that makes the best teachers in my opinion. Thank you. Perfect way to start my Mother's Day.

Thank you for this practice! I suffer migraines and until recently never realized the connection between tension in my hips and my headaches. This practice has become a regular for me and has helped my body feel more relaxed and pain free. Now when I feel the twinges of a migraine coming I work on my hips and my head clears! Amazing!
    • Jason Crandell     Apr 5th, 2014

Thank u Jason, just what I needed today. Love the cue to hold the belly up and in (increasingly round for me too!), the forearm grip in gomukasana and the last hip opener u came up with. Will u be coming to Singapore this year? The Pure Asia tour perhaps?
    • Jason Crandell     Feb 9th, 2014
You're welcome, Catherine! And, yes, the whole tour will probably be Singapore! We're working out the details for a combo training/workshop series!

Wonderful class, Jason. You are the single biggest influence in my growth as a yoga teacher, and I very much appreciate your knowledge and simplicity of communication. I've also been doing a lot of Muay Thai recently, and my hips have been much tighter than I've fully had the patience to resolve for myself so this was the ideal practice for me this evening. Thank you so much, and Happy Holidays to you and your wife. :)
    • Jason Crandell     Dec 23rd, 2013

Jason, I recently finished a 200HR program and really felt a gap in my instruction regarding the art of sequencing. Since I have a pretty full teaching schedule now, I am so grateful for your presence on yogaglo. I do your practices on my own almost daily and then sit down and rewatch and take notes. Your cueing and sequencing is a MAJOR part of my yoga teaching education right now. I'd also like to say I was pretty fed up with vinyasa as I was discouraged by all the fast-paced, cool-tricks yoga classes. In your practices I have re-fallen in love with vinyasa--strong, slow, alignment-based. Thank you for so generously sharing what you know. It has made a huge difference to me--and all my students.
    • Jason Crandell     Sep 23rd, 2013
Jean - I'm so glad to hear that this is helping you with sequencing--and, therefore, your students. And, trust me, sequencing takes a long, long time of trial and error. You're on the right path.
  • Monica Hjerpe     Aug 24th, 2013
As always Jason.....you are the best! A perfect class for hips, but a I also really like the balance in the class with some armsworks. Thank you!

Thank you Jason for a wonderful class! My husband and i have been traveling and this was just the tonic to relieve our tight hips. It gets right into those hard to reach areas and we are blissfully relieved! Particularly loved the pigeon variations and unexpectedly the horse variations! Also love the breakdown, your insightful commentary and structure. With much love, thanks and respect!

thanks Dionne. glad you both enjoyed this practice.

Some great hip exploration. I practiced this a few times and a little pelvic tilting (like in cat cow) is an interesting addition to some of these long held postures. Seems to add a little more movement and ease. Working to pulsate the fascia and explore the pleasure principle of swadisthana.
    • Jason Crandell     Jun 3rd, 2013

Thank you so much. Lovely class. My hips feel so fluid, and I'm going to incorporate some of your moves into my regular practice to balance out my hips more. Been struggling with some SI stuff off and on, and I feel great after this one. I also appreciate such a deep practice at a slow pace - coming from someone that often likes a very active practice. Thank you.

Hi Jason, I've tried a number of routines with different instructors, including a few of your own (this one being the latest) and you are by far my favourite of the lot! I love your instruction, your exploration, and your explanation of what we're actually trying to do. This session was particularly sweet as I have problems with my sacroiliac joint and a couple of the variations you used bordered on the orgasmic! Thanks! :)

Thank you, Jason! After waking up with pain and stiffness in my hips and lower back, all I wanted to do was stay in bed. But after finding this practice I feel so much better and am ready to take on the day. I love the thoroughness of the practice, the creative approaches to common postures and, as always, your instructions which are so clear and helpful. I always feel like I've not only practiced, but learned about my body. Not to mention that last posture was so juicy and delightful!

Hey Jason, I read on the blog that the full circumference of the hips is your go-to practice when pressed for time. It would be awesome if you could create a shorter version of this practice for people in a time crunch. It is one of my favorites but I rarely have an hour. Thanks!
  • Candice Mitchell     May 29th, 2012
Jason, I truly appreciate the thoughtfulness, deliberation, and effort that you put into your teaching. I learn so much each time I practice "with you" on yogaglo. Thank you so much!!!

That was so very good. I love the 360 degree approach which makes total sense. It feels like a complete hip practice rather than just a few long pigeons. I particularly liked the 'reclined half Crandell' at the end. That works very well for these tight hips. That's you. As always - a great class.

I soooo love the way you sequence your practice. I'm not really a vinyasa kinda girl...so I leave a little bit of that out and just stay a little longer in some of your excellent postures. Feeling excellent! Thanks so much.

Did this practice yesterday...and was sweetly open and sore today. So I did it again in the living room with my roommate this afternoon! if it can be said that a yoga practice can be delicious...this certainly was! :) Thank you!!

    p.s. IT'S A CIRCLE! :)
  • Joel G     Feb 25th, 2012

  • Jason Crandell     Feb 18th, 2012
    Thank you Leonora!!
  • Liz Belile     Feb 18th, 2012
Fantastic. Reclining, twisting eye-of-the-needle was extra juicy.

Thank you Jason - I loved the hip stretch in wide legged forward bend, as well as the work in pigeon. Great class - as always.
  • mel Campbell     Feb 17th, 2012
Thank-you Jason for another wonderful class and for all your clear and concise descriptions of the rotation of the hips..loved the twisted thread the needle version.
  • Kestrel Lancaster     Feb 15th, 2012
Great sequence, Jason! My hips thank you.
  • Ann Constantino     Feb 15th, 2012
If only Chris Burman could see back into your living room! Great class. Love the gomukhasana. Also, opening the inner thigh so well first really helped me get deeper into the outer hip in pigeon, which is often an inner thigh wrestling match for my body. Thank you, thank you!
  • Kerri Marchionni     Feb 15th, 2012
Thank you, Jason! I hope you don't mind that I am going to use some of these hip openers for my class. Your cueing is so clear and concise. Truly inspiring. I love the idea of the supported chaturanga push-ups :)!
  • Kerri-Anne Edge     Feb 15th, 2012
Thank you Jason. Your teaching is wonderfully inspiring for my own practice and teaching. I feel priviledged that I can benefit from it from so far away in Te Anau NZ.
  • Christine Tipping     Feb 15th, 2012
Great class! I loved the suspender idea. For me, the last pose doesn't give as much sensation as #4 pose. My husband is requesting a "vinyasa survival" class with focus on transitions and pacing. I'm sure he's not the only one that would benefit from your intelligent and mindful variation on this theme.
  • Jane M     Feb 14th, 2012
I'm not a light girl but after this practice, feel a lot lighter and taller too. Definitely a "do again" practice. Thanks always.
  • Jason Crandell     Feb 14th, 2012
Thanks Lucia! Thrilled it helped you find some space. Best, Jason
  • Lucia Ragazzi     Feb 14th, 2012
beatiful!my hips joint are burning, very loose and spacious...thank you jason!
  • Jason Crandell     Feb 13th, 2012
@ Stephanie, hope opening the hips created space and deprickled your back! thanks!
  • Jason Crandell     Feb 13th, 2012
@ Lynn, the enthusiasm of your comment is making me grin big. thank you!
  • Jason Crandell     Feb 13th, 2012
Glad it worked well for you Marianne!
  • Y Pays     Feb 13th, 2012
You inspired me with the psoas-suspenders. I am delighted to take classes from you. My students in Dallas, TX benefit from you in ways you cannot fathom. I morphed your descriptions into a Mork & Mindy them with rainbow vertical suspenders and the horizonatlly striped shirt highlighting sections of the torso for greater control. Another teacher requested my Crandall-wannabe sequence so you will be distributed and repackaged yet again. Good stuff.
  • Erin Baas     Feb 13th, 2012
Holy Hip Openers Batman! Excellent class Jason!
  • Stephanie Barton     Feb 13th, 2012
Awesome class! My hips are not my tight spot, but my lower back is very prickly, that last pose was amazing!! My back and hips thank you:) Namaste Jason.
  • Amy T     Feb 13th, 2012
Wow! Love this class! The last hip pose is fantastic, this pose works for me! Thanks Jason! I like very much the pace of the class too, allows time to get the alignment in place. Cheers!
  • Silvia Buermann     Feb 12th, 2012

  • Lynn Minton     Feb 12th, 2012
Sweet mother of God...that was fabulous!
  • Marianne S     Feb 12th, 2012
Wonderful - something completely different, and EXACTLY what I needed. Now going to follow with 20 minute "releasing sadness" meditation for some clearing - a good combination I think. Thank you, Jason!
  • Sarah Hon     Feb 12th, 2012
    Good suffering I hope! :)
  • Jason Crandell     Feb 12th, 2012
@sarah, yep, I've suffered a fair amount in this particular pose!
  • Sarah Hon     Feb 12th, 2012
    Yes, "loungefloorasana".

Here's a similar one that's also a great lounge floor twist/hip opener: Lying on your back, knees to chest, take knees over to the right (ie simple spinal twist). Straighten top leg (left) and take hold of the big toe with right hand. Then reach up to grab right foot with left hand, and stretch left shoulder back to the floor, opening the chest.
  • Verena S     Feb 12th, 2012
Cool. I am so looking forward to the full upper body practice. Thanks!
  • Jason Crandell     Feb 12th, 2012
Sarah, I should patent it right? Glad you liked the practice!
  • Jason Crandell     Feb 12th, 2012
@Verena: Yes, you have it! Next time I film (next weekend) I'll create an hour-long practice to help retune the entire upper-body.
@sarah: glad this one works for you!
@Diana: Hope your students enjoy the work!
  • Verena S     Feb 12th, 2012
SO GOOD!!!! Thank you, Jason. It would be great to have something like that (an hour of full work) specifically for the shoulders, too.
  • Sarah Hon     Feb 12th, 2012

  • Diana Norbury     Feb 12th, 2012

Mmmm that was wonderful thank you
  • Michele Carter     Feb 11th, 2012
Thank you Jason! I've had trouble with the fascia around my psoas and adductors for a while and nothing's seemed to help. This got right to it! I'm going to use "your favorite hip-opener" when I'm lounging on the floor as well.
  • Jason Crandell     Feb 11th, 2012
Brandy, I've felt that way too! Glad you and your hips enjoyed it!
  • Jason Crandell     Feb 11th, 2012

  • Reema Arakelian     Feb 11th, 2012
I enjoy and benefit from all your classes. The hip opener pose which you came up with was really great. I could feel the stiffness in my hip as I breathed through it. Thank you

  • Elena Lowenthal     Feb 10th, 2012
