Arm Balance Flow

Vinyasa Flow | By Dice Iida-Klein on Jan 05 2012
A full spectrum 90 minute class. We try to navigate through as many arm balances as possible in 90 minutes. Handstands, forearm balance, eka pada koundinyasana I & II, ashtavakrasana (crooked pose), vasisthasana (side plank), visvamitrasana and even titthibasana (firefly pose). A strong standing section plus an ample amount of core work is followed by time in inversions, a few backbends and twists accompanied by some forward folds. Enjoy my fellow yogis. Long live the full 90min class!

FANTABULOUS! :) Thanks for a totally fun class! LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. Would it be possible to do a 90 minute class with a focus on transitions between all of these great poses (ashtavakrasana to koundinyasana to fallen angel, etc.)? Namaste.

Hi Dice, love this strong arm balance flow. I just join the Yogaglo and had taken few of your classes. you are one of my favorite teacher. I love arm balancing and handstand, the problem is when I am near the wall, I can easily kick up into handstand without crashing my legs to wall, however every time I try to practice at the middle of room, I can only do tiny kick up, any suggestion to overcome this problem ? Thank you in advance Dice. Namaste Fransisca/Indonesia

  • Dice Iida-Klein     Jan 23rd, 2012
@Lisa - You're welcome. Kathryn was one of my first teachers! She rocks! First and foremost, if there is actual pain when this happens, please consult a yoga instructor in person, or a doctor that understands the upper back, neck and shoulder. Sounds like you may have...pinched a nerve, over-used your trapezius, or your shoulder is not engaging like it should when adducting the arm. Make sure you are keeping your shoulder back and drawing your shoulder blades down the back while pressing the bottom end in and up towards your chest. Don't forget to hug the elbow/bicep in to your mid-body at all times. These are only a few possibilities and there could be many more...and yes, the feeling could slowly disappear over time. It's your body...listen to it :) Again, please consult a yoga instructor in person, or some health professional. Practice on my fellow yogi!
  • Dice Iida-Klein     Jan 23rd, 2012
@Stephanie - 2012...the year of the Handstand. So glad that I could be of service, but truly the ability to handstand has always been with you without any of us! Keep doing your thing. As for the backbends...working and strengthening your shoulders could give you a platform to open your upper back safely and with integrity making your backbends feel amazing. Relish away! More 90min to come :)
  • Dice Iida-Klein     Jan 23rd, 2012
    @Bernadette - You're welcome :)
  • Dice Iida-Klein     Jan 23rd, 2012
@John - Thanx John. Glad you enjoyed the practice. More like this to come.
  • Dice Iida-Klein     Jan 23rd, 2012
@Patti - You're welcome. More 90min to come! Stay tuned.
  • Dice Iida-Klein     Jan 23rd, 2012
@Lisa - I love them too! Straightening the leg in that variation will happen when it's supposed to. No rush :) More handstands to come. Thank you for the engagement wishes!!! Bri is amazing and I'm a lucky man!
  • Jambo Truong     Jan 22nd, 2012
Hey Dice! Great session! I'd LOVE to see a tutorial/class/workshop on lifting into handstand with straight legs if that inspires you ; )
  • Nick Heng     Jan 20th, 2012
Love it! :d agree with Noah, fun and rocking! thanks for inspiring :D
  • Noah Maze     Jan 12th, 2012
    Strong. Fun. Rockin. Thanks!
  • Lisa Martinez     Jan 9th, 2012
Thanks Dice....so much better at arm balances thanks to you and Kathryn. Question: when I do rajakapotasana (sp?) and drop back to backbends, behind my right scapula hurts like it's very, very tight. Is that alright...will it loosen after some time or do I need to do something different?
  • Stephanie Dufort     Jan 7th, 2012
Balancing handstand is my goal this year....your classes are helping me get closer and closer every day. On another note, i wouldnt have thought of this class as encouraging the actions for backbends, but im pretty sure i have never felt as good in full wheel as i did today. I have rather tight shoulders and usually i cant wait to come down, but i found myself relishing in it today! I LOVE the 90 min classes, i hope you keep adding more :-)
  • Bernadette Alvarez Tostado     Jan 7th, 2012

Hi Dice, love the arm balance/handstand based vinyasas!! Your high energy classes are so addictive--can't get enough! Working on the visvamitrasana variation...got the knee behind the neck but can't staighten the leg. I'm also working hard to improve my handstands so pls keep them coming. BTW, congrats on your engagement. Bri is an awesome yogi/instructor! Just tried out her class on YA.
