Lymphatic System Flush

Hatha | By Felicia Tomasko on Jan 13 2012
The intelligence of the body is how Ayurveda describes the immune system. The more we do to cultivate that intelligence, the better. This practice of circular floor movements, twists, and standing poses helps to cultivate the intelligence of prana in the body and to flush whatever needs to be flushed from the lymphatic system. The standing poses in this series include a dancing warrior series and triangle poses with arm circles. We end this practice with a seated so-hum meditation to internalize the heat cultivated in this warming practice that is suitable for beginners.

I loved the practice, but found the music in the background very distracting.
    • Felicia Tomasko     May 16th, 2014
Dear Kristin, Thank you for the note and the feedback. There are a number of classes of mine online that don't have music. Music is such a subjective experience and we all have different musical tastes. Hope to see you again online. Namaste, Felicia
  • Elisabeth Andrews     Jan 22nd, 2014
Returning to this class for a second day in a row! The perfect remedy for a nasty cold. Like chicken soup for the yogi soul. Thank you, Felicia!
    • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 22nd, 2014
Dear Elisabeth, I love that this class is like chicken (or maybe turmeric) soup for your soul. We all need to flush things out, to find and re-find (and to refine) our relationship with balance. I hope the cold remedy works and may you be well! You've already come back to this class, but remember you can revisit it again. Hope you feel better and thanks for the note. Namaste, Felicia
  • Ariela Summit     Jan 18th, 2014
Thanks for helping me get up and move and breath during the first miserable day of being sick (on a weekend, no less!). I feel a lot more circulation and expansiveness in my body now. Half an hour was also a good non-intimidating length class for those feeling under the weather.
    • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 22nd, 2014
Dear Ariela, I'm glad to hear that this practice was helpful for you to find more circulation and expansiveness in your body. Half and hour is a great length to practice when you're trying to feel better (so that you don't become exhausted by the class). Hope you were able to recover well and easily and remember you can come back to the practice any time you need a reboot. Take good care. Namaste, Felicia
  • Beth Dorman     Jan 11th, 2014

Namaste Felicia! I'm delighted I ventured off for the day away from your Yin classes and found this perfectly lovely and yummy practice. I do feel a bit flushed out after taking this class and am going to stick to it for a while. I am going to check out some of your other Hatha classes. Thanks so much!! Juliana

Dear Juliana, I'm happy to hear that you enjoy my Yin classes and also glad to hear that you tried out some of the other types of practices. Wonderful class, I appreciate your wisdom and generosity so much, Felicia. I'm at the end of a cold, and the rhythmic repetitions of this practice together with your words have lifted me straight out of my 'poor, tired me' funk and brought back my awareness of how this body has amazing strength, intelligence, and resilience. Many thanks!
    • Felicia Tomasko     Nov 15th, 2013
Dear Laura, Thank you for your feedback. I'm happy to hear that this helped shift out of the energetic funk of having a cold. Yes, you do have amazing strength, intelligence, and resilience and remember it regularly--one of the things practice does for us is remind us of this powerful relationship. Feel better and remember that you can come back to this practice any time. Many Blessings and Namaste, Felicia

  • Tracey Ellis     Oct 25th, 2013
Dear Felicia, I love this class - and the rhythmic repetitions! If I want to do more like this with you on yogaglo, do I look for lymphatic ones?
    • Felicia Tomasko     Oct 28th, 2013
Dear Tracey, I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed this class and I'm happy to hear that you found the rhythmic repetitions meaningful. Definitely look for the lymphatic practices, the immune system building practices, and the hatha practices for more rhythmic slow flowing practices that move energy. Hope that helps! Let me know if you find other classes that are meaningful for you. Namaste, Felicia

  • Effie H     Oct 14th, 2013
    Hi Felicia,

Thank you for your wisdom - since starting your classes I have learnt so much and my ayurvedic interest has been sparked!

However, I have been sick for the past few weeks with a throat infection which turned into mono and I never get ill :( - I have not done any vinyasa, just kept it to immune and lymphatic system practices that you and Tiffany and Jo offer on yogaglo. Would you advise me doing anything different?

    Thank you again
    • Felicia Tomasko     Oct 14th, 2013
Dear Fini, I'm sorry to hear that you're not feeling well, but sometimes even the best living is not a guarantee that we won't get sick. While as a yoga teacher, I cannot give medical advice and we recommend and feel it is important that you consult your doctor to address any specific medical needs, in my experience and from the perspective of Yoga and Ayurveda, when you're in the midst of something chronic as you've described, it is important to slow down and provide the conditions for the body to heal itself. Continue to listen to your intuition and support yourself with the immune and lymphatic system practices. Give yourself extra rest.

On another note, I'm happy to hear that your interest in Ayurveda has been sparked and that you feel you have learned much from these classes! May the exploration continue. Take care of yourself and please stay in touch. Namaste, Felicia

    • Felicia Tomasko     Oct 3rd, 2013
Dear Ewa, I know about those moments when we don't feel like moving, but in those moments, appropriate movement can be important to cultivate balance. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the practice. See you again! Namaste, Felicia
  • Ana Luisa Romero     Oct 2nd, 2013
Trying to get over a 5-day cold and the nasty cough that comes at the tail-end of it...this is the best gift to my body! Will definitely make it a regular practice now that Autumn and its changes are here. Thank you Felicia.
    • Felicia Tomasko     Oct 2nd, 2013
Dear Ana, thank you for your note. I'm glad to hear that you felt better after this practice (that's the idea!). This is particularly supportive during the times of the year when the weather and different energetic patterns are shifting--in and out of our bodies. I hope you are able to come back to this practice as often as needed. Look forward to hearing from you again. Namaste, Felicia
  • Jennifer Buley     Sep 19th, 2013
That was awesome, Felicia. Thank you for this creative, supportive practice (and the perfectly-timed reminders to release the glutey death grip). I feel better already.
    • Felicia Tomasko     Sep 20th, 2013
Dear Jennifer, I'm happy to hear that you found this practice to be both creative and supportive (that was my intention for sure!). We all need those reminders to use the body appropriately and not death grip some muscles while leaving others slack and sleepy. Glad to hear that you feel better and I hope you are able to revisit the practice as often as needed. Blessings, Felicia
  • Jennifer Buley     Sep 19th, 2013

When you say, "feel the grooviness of the movement," I do not think I have ever felt groovier. Rock on! And thank you! Your classes are helping me through life right now. You mean a lot to many I am sure. Just wanted to express my gratitude.
    • Felicia Tomasko     Aug 12th, 2013
Dear Ellie, Thank you for your kind note. It touched my heart. I love exploring the grooviness so I'm glad you found this sentiment meaningful as well. The beautiful thing about practice is that it helps us through so much of life, allowing us to develop a profound relationship with the body we have right now. Continue to rock on! Love, Felicia
  • Theresa MacBeth     Jul 29th, 2013
Hi Felicia thanks for this great practice. I have a question about something interesting that came up for me after doing the class. I did it a couple of times this past week to help get over a nasty chest cold. After the second time I did the practice, I developed an enlarged, inflamed lymph node in my groin. Have you ever seen this happen in relation to the practice? What do you think it means? Not looking for medical advice (I did seek medical attention), just wondering if there is an Ayurvedic explanation for this. Thanks again,
    Theresa
    • Felicia Tomasko     Aug 7th, 2013
Dear Theresa, I'm glad that you sought medical attention for what you described as my answer is not a substitute for seeking medical advice and is from the perspective of yoga and Ayurveda. In terms of an Ayurvedic explanation, any inflammation is related to the energetics of the pitta dosha. So, I'd think about ensuring that there are things in your routine to help assist you in cooling off. Congestion suggests the need, from the perspective of Ayurveda, to increase circulation in the body; for myself, I might utilize a compress, such as a hot water bottle, to encourage circulation. Did the lymph node decrease?

I hope you felt better in terms of the cold. From an Ayurvedic perspective, the cold can indicate that there is congestion in the body which may have came up during the practice. Let me know how you're feeling. Felicia
      • Theresa MacBeth     Aug 8th, 2013
Thanks so much for your response. The inflammation did go away after a week and my cold has subsided. I kept doing the practice in the spirit of continuing to flush things out! Very helpful to understand this is related to a pitta issue. I can research more about that. I have Deepak's Perfect Health book, which has lots of info on how to influence those sorts of imbalances. I just didn't know what was imbalanced and now I do! Thanks again for the advice and direction. I love your classes and your whole background and philosophy is fascinating!
        • Felicia Tomasko     Aug 12th, 2013
Dear Theresa, From the perspective of Ayurveda, whenever there is congestion or swelling, there is an involvement of Kapha. Heat and inflammation reveals Pitta, while pain and a feeling of things not moving relates to Vata. (Hope that helps.) Personally, I find when the body needs to move through something, it is important to check in with ourselves and just keep going. Of course, we always want to be aware of the warning signals of pain and to understand that practice is never a substitute for seeking qualified medical advice. I'm glad to hear that you enjoy my classes. I love the process of synthesizing the Eastern and Western approaches to health and the body. Blessings, Felicia

Dear Melissa, sorry to hear about the bug, but I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better after the practice. I've really been enjoying your lymphatic flush classes. I'm a cancer patient and always trying to keep my immunity up as well as trying to keep lymphedema at bay in my arm. This 30 minute class is also great for the mom on the run and in line with my current stamina! I will do this class all week!
    • Felicia Tomasko     Mar 13th, 2013
Dear Jennell, I'm sorry to hear about your challenge with cancer but glad to hear that you're finding some support through yoga. I've worked with people in my family, as a nurse, and as a yoga teacher, in various stages of the relationship with cancer for years and it's one of the things that has inspired these sequences--along with just the need all of us have to pay attention to this part of our physiology. Strengthening the immune system and supporting healthy circulation of the lymphatic system are essential for good health, well-being, and vitality. May you continue to be well and may your stamina always increase. Enjoy! Felicia

    • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 7th, 2013
Dear Chris, Unfortunately this is the time of year when we can be more susceptible to whatever is going around, but that's when it becomes important to strengthen our body from the inside, including maintaining adequate circulation in the lymphatic system. I'm glad you found that this sequence helped you to feel better--it's amazing when we do a simple cleansing practice how it can gently flush the body. Thank YOU for participating and for being part of the Yogaglo community. Felicia

    • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 7th, 2013

  • Jennifer LaFleur     Aug 23rd, 2012
wow, that was amazing. I've had lymph nodes removed, so I really appreciate practices focused on lymphatic circulation. this one was my favorite so far! the fluidity is just blissful. thank you!
    • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 7th, 2013
Dear Jennifer, When we've had any lymph nodes removed, then we need to be especially focused on lymphatic circulation. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the fluidity and the movement in this practice. Keep up the circulation and I have a variety of classes on the site with an emphasis on circulation through the lymphatic system, so I hope you find them helpful and utilize the concepts away from the mat (or computer) as well. Many Blessings, Felicia

    • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 7th, 2013
Dear Sang, sometimes with a headache, a lot is stuck in the body and can benefit from opening, letting go, and improving circulation. I'm glad to hear that this helped you release tension in the neck and the rest of the body. Thank you for being part of the Yogaglo community, Felicia

yoga amazes me everyday. i have not been able to breathe through my nose all night, did this in the middle of the night to try and open up my sinuses so i could try and get some sleep and now im finally ready for bed :) thank you!
    • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 7th, 2013
Dear Alyssa, Yoga amazes me every day as well! I'm happy to hear that this practice helped shift your breath and open up your sinuses. Sometimes when we can't sleep, the best thing to do is what you did and just get out of bed and change things up in the body. Hope you got a good night's sleep and have the opportunity to come back to this practice. Blessings, Felicia

    I feel empowered. Thankyou.
    • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 7th, 2013
Dear Hannah, Feeling empowered is one of the best results we can experience from the practice. The idea is that when we take time to dive into our relationship with our body, mind, heart and spirit we help to facilitate a sense of inner balance and well-being. Thank you for being part of this community, Felicia

Dear Callie, Hope this practice helps reset the body in those moments when you feel rundown. And sometimes to open up the breath in the body, we need movement to shift things, and I'm glad to hear that the practice had this effect for you. Enjoy your breath! Felicia

Dear Elaine, It's so easy for us to neglect our neck and shoulders (aside from holding a lot of tension there). I'm glad to hear that these shoulder and neck circles help make the connections with the twists. I also love the flows between the warrior poses and find them powerful ways to connect breath and body, fluidity and stability. Hope to see you again on the mat! Felicia
  • Elaine Buck     Feb 27th, 2012
Great class, I neglect my neck and shoulder areas during lymphatic movements, but those simple shoulder and neck circles make the connection with the twists and I love the flows between warrior poses. Thanks Felicia.
  • Felicia Tomasko     Feb 14th, 2012

Dear Brona, glad you loved this practice. Thanks for your kind words. Of course, wecare always conceptualizing and filming new classes. Thanks for practicing with me at Yogaglo & hope to see you on the mat again soon. Felicia

  • Felicia Tomasko     Feb 1st, 2012
Dear Kristine, I'm delighted to be able to share with a fellow student of Ayurveda. As you know and appreciate, the two traditions are so strongly and powerfully integrated. When we incorporate the philosophy if Ayurveda into our practice, it is powerful. I love the dancing warrior series as well. It's amazing for the lymphatic system but also supports our overall energy level. Do stay in touch! Felicia
  • Stephanie Barton     Jan 30th, 2012
Exactly what I needed this afternoon:) Thanks for sharing this practice with us. Namaste
  • Mark & Kris MacLeod     Jan 30th, 2012
    Dear Felicia,

Thank you so much for this wonderful practice. As a yogi and student of Ayurveda, I appreciate you offering these practices that integrate the philosophy of Ayurveda with yoga. I truly enjoyed the dancing warrior series - I felt my breath really driving the motion and fluidity. I followed up with an extended meditation afterwards and I am feeling so good!

    Kristine

    Loved it!! Thank you.
  • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 25th, 2012
Dear Jenene, Glad to hear that you're feeling better! As a yoga teacher I cannot give medical advice and we recommend and feel it is important that you consult your doctor to address any specific medical needs. In my experience and from the perspective of practice yoga, when we're in the midst of a cold, anything that helps to improve circulation can be helpful, along with drinking additional fluids and making sure to get enough rest. This is another reason why practices that are short and sweet can be helpful--they shift things in the body without overtaxing the system. Do this practice again as needed, get plenty of rest and hope you continue to feel better, Felicia
  • Jenene C     Jan 25th, 2012
i'm in the middle of a nasty cold, and this felt great! should be required for cold sufferers... heh
  • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 24th, 2012
Thanks Nichole! Great to hear from you! Felicia
  • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 21st, 2012
Dear Kim, glad to hear you found this helpful! Thanks for the note. Although as a yoga teacher I cannot give medical advice and we recommend and feel it is important that you consult your doctor to address any specific medical needs. In my experience and from the perspective of practicing yoga when we're on the verge of or fighting off a cold, things that flush our body: movement that stimulates the lymphatic system, drinking extra fluids and getting some additional sleep, are all helpful to try. Hope you're able to fight it off easily! Be well, Felicia
  • Kim Morris     Jan 21st, 2012
Fighting off a cold. I think this helped.
  • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 20th, 2012
Dear Shari, I'm glad you've enjoyed the classes on Yogaglo. You'll be glad to know we're always filming new practices to share. And if you're ever in Santa Monica, you can join us in class. Otherwise, I do spend some time traveling (when I'm not in LA). I do love The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies by Vasant Lad and I recommend his other books as well. Ayurveda, the Science of Self-Healing is a fun classic. I'm honored that you like my voice and thanks for the book shout-out. Do stay in touch and see you again online I hope, Felicia
  • Shari Gass     Jan 20th, 2012
Felicia, Yes please to the book! I think I've done most of the classes on yoga glo and enjoyed them all. Will look forward to more. I have the Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies by Vasant Lad that was recommended by yoga teacher at a workshop in MI. Pretty good. I love your "voice" and can't wait for the book. Thanks, Shari
  • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 20th, 2012
Dear Shari, thank you for your kind words and I'm glad to hear that you're finding the practices helpful. I think the emphasis on the lymphatic system is important, although I don't know of many books that deal with this directly, but I will look. For my resources, I use the teachings of Ayurveda and my background as a nurse, along with two decades of study and practice of yoga therapy to implement these sequences. I am working on a book, so maybe it's time for me to put a fire under myself. In any case, there are a variety of these lymphatic immune system building classes on the site, so have fun! Thanks again, Felicia
  • Shari Gass     Jan 20th, 2012
Felicia, I've enjoyed all of your classes - you are a very gifted teacher. I've really gotten interested in the Ayurveda aspect of yoga especially how it effects the lymphatic system/immune system. Can you recommend any resources to learn more? Thank you, Shari
  • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 20th, 2012
Dear Liz, I felt the same way--like a dancer--when I practiced the warrior flow sequence for the first time. I was inspired by a class I took with Shiva Rea and I've been experimenting with different variations of the sequence in various classes and like you, many people have loved it. Those circular, flowing movements have a powerful effect on improving circulation in the lymphatic system. Glad to hear that this is one of your favorites! Thanks for the feedback! Felicia
  • Liz Schweizer     Jan 20th, 2012
I had never done a warrior flow sequence like that and I felt like a dancer. The circular movements of this practice are wonderful for my body. This will be another of my favourites. Thanks so much!!
  • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 19th, 2012
Dear Isabella, it's so fun to connect with the people taking my classes. Thanks for your notes! Hope you're enjoying Yogaglo. See you again on the mat. Love back to you. Felicia

  • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 17th, 2012
Dear Sophia, thank you for your comments. I'm glad you liked the flowing movements in this sequence. It was fun for me to create this laid back vibe as we need the stimulating practices that shift things in our body yet are still chill and allow us to feel a sense of rejuvenation and restoration. Hope you stayed warm on that cool winter night. Hope to see you again online! Felicia
  • Sophia Verzosa     Jan 17th, 2012

Dear Tara, Welcome to Yogaglo! I'm honored that you have chosen to practice with me and that you're enjoying the practices I've shared. I love the lymphatic system flush as well. Dear Ami, Thanks for the note. It's a delight to have you practice with us at Yogaglo, Felicia
  • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 17th, 2012
Dear Shoshana, I'm sorry to hear that you've been sick a lot this year. I hope you take good care of yourself. Personally, I started teaching more of these practices since I get it--last year, high levels of stress and change in my life had an adverse effect on my own immune system and these types of practices have been invaluable. Do take care of yourself. There are a number of immune system strengthening practices on Yogaglo, so enjoy them! Felicia
  • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 17th, 2012
Dear Tara, Thanks for your question and I hope you are recovering well and taking care of yourself (if you are asking about you). As a yoga teacher, I cannot give medical advice and we recommend and feel it is important that you consult your doctor to address any specific medical needs. In my experience and from the perspective of yoga, any restorative practice done gently that allows the nervous system to become calm, that fosters a valuable and nurturing sense of ease in the body and mind, and helps rejuvenate the body are important. It is necessary to remember that additional doses of loving-kindness are some of the most important yoga practices that one can repeat on a daily basis. Go easy on the body, rest often. Personally, I love gentle restorative poses such as laying with the spine over a soft bolster in a simple backbend (one that is not too extreme) where the head is supported. Always make sure to listen to the signals of the body and rest often. In my experience, poses and practices that support proper functioning of the lymphatic system can be helpful for resetting the body in general. As in any situation, listen to the body, drink plenty of fluids, rest often and always communicate with your doctor. Be well and thank you for participating with us at Yogaglo, Felicia
  • Ami Amore'     Jan 16th, 2012

  • Felicia Tomasko     Jan 13th, 2012
Dear Erica, I'm glad to hear that this got things moving for you. Great to hear that your headache has eased and that you feel better. Have an awesome day, Felicia
