This class works! My lower back flares up from time to time, the latest flare up has been ongoing for 3-4 days. My pain began to subside about half way through the class, now it is gone. Appreciate the pointers throughout the class on how to balance/protect/release the lower back and si joint. AND........I just signed up for all your classes at Wanderlust New Zealand. I am thrilled you are coming here!!
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Dec 1st, 2014
So great to hear Cynthia, I'm glad this has been helpful for you. I'm so looking forward to my first visit to New Zealand & of course the incredible festival there! See you soon. ;)
  • Jade Brodie     Nov 23rd, 2014
I loved this class! Thanks, Tiffany, for a wonderful start to the day. I struggle to find classes that suit me due to a chronic lower back and sacroiliac injury but this felt fantastic. I find with my hypermobile, lordotic back that most "chronic back pain" classes work on a lot of extension that my body doesn't love. I really feel open and relaxed after such a balanced class, and I particularly loved the cues you gave in the bridging exercise. I am a serious butt clencher, so thanks for setting me straight!
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Dec 1st, 2014
lol, me too. I'm glad it was helpful Jade. Keep your eyes peeled, I have an article on hypermobility coming out in a couple months for the Yoga Journal Anatomy column... ;)

I am a yiga teacher with a troubled back from my time as an ice skater, and this targeted all my issue areas...thank you so much....will come back to this one....
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Dec 1st, 2014
Your welcome Jo, glad it was helpful! :)
  • Cheryl Crook     Aug 11th, 2014
This class alongside the SI balance and pelvic symmetry classes are literally seeing me through to the other side of months of low back / glute med and SI pain. These are my favorite yoga classes ever (even though I have to stop half way through and laugh at myself every time as they are really hard). I really hope to do your yoga medicine training at some point and hope that this is the kind of approach that you'll teach in the training xx
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Aug 22nd, 2014
Thanks Cheryl, glad its been helpful for you. Would love to have you in a training. The 200hr training is mainly the foundations for teaching but our 500 hr & 1000hr trainings are all about learning how to understand the body on a deeper level to apply the practice in a more individualized & therapeutic way. If you have questions about it email Dena@YogaMedicine.com ;)
  • Samirah Simms     Aug 1st, 2014
Tried this class for the first time because running has tightened up my hamstrings and has been causing me lower back pain. It did NOT feel like an hour, I LOVE how you held the poses for a long time. This class did EXACTLY what I was hoping it would do and I think I may do this every day this week even when I run again.

LOVE IT, LOVE IT... LOVE.. IT!!
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Aug 22nd, 2014
Thanks Samirah, glad its been helpful for you! ;)

    Gorgeous, thanks Tiff!! :)
  • yogagal      Mar 12th, 2014
PS perhaps without linking that many poses together on 1 side of body before getting to other side. Tough for level 1/2 and any of us with chronic low back, tight QL, erectors usually on 1 side.
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Mar 13th, 2014
Will do, thanks yoga gal ;)
  • yogagal      Mar 12th, 2014
We all need you Tif...to do another level 1/2 low back sequence. I'm sure you have gathered MANY insights in the last 2 1/2 years since this one posted. Pretty please:)
  • iona carter     Mar 12th, 2014
This practice genuinely changed my life! I do it every week and it's really helped me so much with my chronic lower back pain so I just wanted to say thanks :)

Tiffany, I love your focus on structure, etc. This was incredibly helpful for my sore back, and I'd love to acclimate it into my practice at least 1-2x weekly. Huge thank you.

Great to hear Sami, so glad it was helpful for you! :)
  • Yvonne Huegele     Jan 4th, 2014
Thank you Tiffany, it really helped. I love your anatomy and chinese medicine based yoga, which forms the body into a healthier shape and takes it from there to actually be fitter. So, thanks!
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Jan 5th, 2014
Thanks Yvonne, glad it was helpful. Happy new year! :)
  • Heidi Niemimuukko     Jan 2nd, 2014
Thanks Tiffany. I feel the burn in my legs and less pain in my back. The comment that chinese medicine thinks lower back pain is because of over doing really hit home.
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Jan 2nd, 2014
Glad it helped Heidi! Happy new year :)

Returning to my desk job after an extended maternity leave has resulted in an achey, sore back. Thanks for this! My back feels better after just one class. I'm planning to do this regularly.

  • Jasmine Kilpatrick     Oct 5th, 2013
I cannot begin to tell you how helpful this class has been in reducing/eliminating my lower back discomfort and right hip tightness. For the past couple days, and for the first time in years, I've had tons more freedom of movement and lack of pinching in those areas. The pose that helped me the most was using the block to squeeze the upper thighs together while lifting hips from a supine position. Wow-- I could feel muscles in there I had no idea existed (and I'm a RN)! Thank you so very much for your knowledge and teaching.
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Oct 6th, 2013
So happy to hear its helping Jasmine!! Glad you have a resource to help you work through the pain and see a way out... :)

  • yogagal      Aug 31st, 2013
Looks like lot's of us love these "low back" focus...it's been 2 years, you have probably learned even more in this area, how about an updated level 1/2 circa 2013 with further insight into this prevalent epidemic...low back "issues"
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Sep 22nd, 2013
I agree, more on the way yoga gal ;)
  • Garnet Reardon     Aug 15th, 2013
Thanks Tiffany, your classes are my absolute favorites:) Please do more like this class... I think I'm onto something during the forward folds... my pelvis is majorly stuck. When sitting and folding forward I round my low back and found it very difficult to straighten without pulling on my foot to help. Is that a no no? Also my straight let cramped a little from trying to keep it engaged. Wish you were closer so I could actually attend a class:) Thanks so much for this...
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Sep 22nd, 2013
I'm not sure what you mean by pulling on your foot but if it helps you lengthen the low back in your forward folds then its probably a good thing. Sending love from Sydney ;)

  • Tara Jungclaus     Apr 26th, 2013
This is the first class I did after joining YogaGlo, and this class alone is well worth my monthly membership. Classes I have done in the past that were for the lower back often empasized strengthening the abs and core. While I understand that's important, it usually just made my lower back hurt more. But this class left me feeling refreshed and with a deeper awareness of everything I need to use for low back strength and support. Thank you!
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Apr 27th, 2013
Thanks Tara, so glad it was helpful for you! :)
  • yogagal      Apr 14th, 2013
Having low grade low back pain and SIJ issues for over a year. Have done all of the lower back classes on the glo, this is the only one that gave me relief for over 24 hours, sometimes we don't even realize how much chronic pain, till it's gone. The other classes deal more with flatten lower lumbar and tight hamstrings, mine is opposite, overly flexible, some ligaments I think now overstretched and not "supporting". Did get to see how weak my lower glutes and hamstrings and quads are. Could you bring herman back and do another well balanced class for those of us who suffer from low back issues, the numbers of us are mounting. THANKS TIFFANY, your knowledge is beyond your years.
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Apr 20th, 2013
Thanks yogagal, I'm so glad it helped you. I'll put it on the list. ;)

This is my first time practicing with you.I have been an Anusara practitioner for many years, however I have been off my practice for about a year due to a few major injuries .Because of that and doing a lot of lying down my back has been very tight and painful (L4&5). Your class has helped me so much.I love your method of teaching. No extra talking just enough and you are extremely knowledgeable & qualified.
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Mar 8th, 2013
Thanks Susan, I appreciate your comment, that's so nice! I'm glad it's been helpful for you. :)

Great class! Just what I needed for my lower back. I love all the anatomy you pulled into the class.
  • Jaime Bastian     Dec 26th, 2012
i love your classes, this one especially! your flow is so natural, challenging but timed perfectly. i especially appreciate that you do the entire class - sometimes when instructors are walking around or talking too much they lose track of the time and the sides get uneven but you always make me feel balanced. Your poses are elegant and graceful, they inspire me to move with the purpose you possess. Thanks so much for being a part of yogaglo so that I could practice with you.
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Dec 27th, 2012
Thanks Jaime, glad you're enjoying my classes! :)

What an incredible class Tiffany!!!! Thank YOU SO MUCH!!! I feel invigorated and in a state of meditative bliss*** Wow! Super sweet :) I started the practiced feeling all screwed up in the lower back ;) and as I started the flow, I experienced an immediate release... so much so that I was able to extend my muscles like never before :) Doubly cool... on it goes to my favorites :) Thank you! Loved the pace of the practice and functional training approach! Perfect*** All MY LOVE XOXOXO
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Dec 25th, 2012
      Great to hear Isabella. :)
  • T K     Oct 2nd, 2012
Amazing class. Thanks for the verbal cues and anatomical explanations. I really liked that I had time to explore my pelvic tilt and practice getting in the right position. Reading through the comments, I see that I'm not the only who has been practicing incorrectly (posterior pelvic tilting) and getting flare-ups in the lower back. I'll apply what I learned to my regular practice. Will you do a class for the upper back?
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Dec 25th, 2012
Thanks Tammie, glad its helping. Try my neck and shoulders class, I think you'll find that does the trick, also try my backbend class with straps. Enjoy! :)
  • Cheryl Vallerie     Sep 15th, 2012
Tiffany: this was without a doubt one of the best classes I've taken. I hurt my back in July from picking up and carrying around my 2yr old. I hurt the muscles where my ribs meet the spine and this class was one of the1st times I have had some relief since July! Thank you so much! God Bless!
    • Sarah Lepage     Mar 22nd, 2013
Same here - hurt my back a couple days ago in the same spot, and was worried about aggravating it with yoga, particularly twists. This class was perfect, I think my back literally sighed! :) Thank you!
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Dec 25th, 2012
Yay, glad its helping Cheryl! :)
  • Lacey AuCoin     Sep 4th, 2012
Thanks Tiffany, love your classes and use them regularly :) Do you have any additional stretches that you could recommend for the QL? I tweaked my back a long while ago and my mucles became very guarded/twitchy. Physio and accupuncture have been doing a world of good (and I got a green light from my physio to start adding in more active exercises and stretches), but I find that sometimes I'm just looking for something a little more to get that good side stretch in the low back...
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Dec 25th, 2012
Try my IT band class that can put some slack on the whole side line of the body. :)
  • Marcie Frehner     Aug 22nd, 2012
I feel so good! I have been learning so much from you Tiffany. Thank you!
  • Jeanne Catanzaro     Aug 19th, 2012
    wonderful practice - thank you!

  • Tiffany Cruikshank     Aug 1st, 2012
Hey Rebecca, the two main things to watch for the knees are to make sure the patella is tracking right over the ankle so your kneecap points straight forward and to ease off a little if it's painfull (ie lift up out of it a little). Hopefully one or both of those should help. The warrior poses when done with good alignment help to balance the tone of the inner & outer quads to help the patella track properly which often helps the knees. ;)
  • Rebecca Hawkes     Jul 23rd, 2012
Thank you for the video! Unfortunately I also have problematic knnees so found some of the warrior poses challenging. Do you have any suggestions
  • Carol Lakin     Jun 26th, 2012
Very helpful..great class. My low back pain radiates to my right hip, sometimes both hips. Any suggestions or maybe another class you teach on Yoga Glo would be therapeutic for this problem.
    • Tiffany Cruikshank     Jan 9th, 2013
Sorry, I must have missed this one Carol. It's hard to tell what's causing that without being able to evaluate it in person but if you try a few of these you can figure out what helps just by watching how you feel after. That will give you a good look into what's contributing. Try my release the groin yin class on nov 7th, 2012, also try my psoas tribute on aug 22, 2012, my pelvis and SI joint class on aug 3rd, 2012, hamstring & it band class on aug 1, 2012, and open your heart on aug 4th, 2012. There's more but those would be my first choice, then you can see what helps. Miss you Carol. xoxo
  • Irena Fleming     Jun 6th, 2012
Tiffany,I think this practice effectively helped me isolate my back pain to clenching around my sacrum. I can't, however, for the life of me figure out how to relax that part of my body. Do you have any additional tips or suggestions? Thank you for helping me understand my back and back pain better.
  • jillian pransky     May 13th, 2012
Great therapeutic Flow! Thanks. I'll come back to this one for sure. Namaste.

  • Kim Stafford     Feb 13th, 2012
Tiffany. Your class was the perfect cure and saved me a trip to the chiropractor. Three quarters of the way through this practice my vertabrate all popped into place on their own. Just what I needed! Thank you.
  • Tiffany Cruikshank     Feb 13th, 2012
Great to hear Alinsa, nice to have you on here! ;)
  • Alinsa Clarke     Feb 12th, 2012
I loved this class! Thank you!
  • shawn milligan     Feb 2nd, 2012
Thank you! I'll try again with your recommendation.
  • Tiffany Cruikshank     Feb 2nd, 2012
Sorry to hear that Shawn. This class is meant for more chronic low grade back pain so if your having more acute, intense pain you may want to skip it altogether. However if it was just the core work at the beginning you can try just leaving your hips on the floor and doing everything else or just skip that very first part entirely if it's still painful. Hope that helps. :)
  • shawn milligan     Feb 1st, 2012
Is there a way I can do them more safely?
  • shawn milligan     Feb 1st, 2012
Unfortunately, the first exercises hurt my low back.
  • Tiffany Cruikshank     Jan 17th, 2012
That's so sweet, great to hear Catriona, I love that. Thanks for the feedback, glad to help. xoxo :)
  • Catriona Andrew     Jan 16th, 2012
I've been doing this practice a lot to heal my back, and I get more and more out of each time - I love your classes Tiffany, you are a genius x
  • Tiffany Cruikshank     Jan 4th, 2012
    Glad it helped Catriona! ;)
  • Tiffany Cruikshank     Jan 4th, 2012
Great to hear Susan. That opening in the hips comes over time, try not to worry about getting them to the ground and just keep working on opening the hips. We have a special section on YogaGlo on hip opening classes, check it out. ;)
  • Catriona Andrew     Jan 4th, 2012
Thank you so much, my back feels amazing after this.
  • Susan Boehnke     Dec 28th, 2011
Tiffany, Thankyou so much for this class. I come back to it regularly and I am definitely seeing improvement. When we are sitting down toward the end of the class, my knees are staying at an angle. I cannot open them to be flat on the ground (like yours are). Is there anything I can do to help open them up?
  • Tiffany Cruikshank     Nov 15th, 2011
Yes Susan, that's perfectly fine. In fact part of what we're doing is trying to build strength in the legs to help suppport the back so the shaking in the legs is a good sign that they are getting tired. If it's toward the beginning of class then it could just be a sign that the legs are a little weak in which case continuing to strengthen them with a class like this is helpful. If it's toward the end of the class it probably just means you were doing it correctly and your legs were tired as they should be at the end. If it feels more like they are cramping or twitching you may want to try some electrolytes. I hope that helps Susan. ;)

Is it normal for the legs to shake during the workout?

This is one of the best lower back practice ever! I have sciatica and lower back pain and the practice made me feel more open in my lower back. The side body work did wonders. Will be coming back to this practice often. Thank you so much.

    Hi Tiffany,
Just wanted to let you know what a back-saver this class is, especially after a kettlebell workout or just whenever my back feels ‘out’. It’s one of my favorite classes by you and I find myself returning to it time and again. Thanks for making such a therapeutic class available… Looking forward to do your latest hamstring class and hope that you’ll do one for psoas release.

Dear Tiffany, thanks for this class. I'm recovering from an acute lower back pain attack. As the practice progressed, I noticed the pain is the most severe when my back is rounded (bowing of head, bending forward, etc). Forward tilting of the pelvis is very difficult for me. I'm grateful for the realization this practice offered me. I'm getting to know my body better :)

Tiffany your other side stretching class is also really helping me. I have always struggled with Parivrrta Trikonasana, in fact it was excruciating. Now, I can start to open up into it and I am delighted. Thank you and Namaste, Kate

Oh, what I meant to say is that it is really helpful doing Gomukhasana in supine, I have never tried that before and my muscle were really able to release, Yah!
  • Kate Gerry     Oct 5th, 2011
Tiffany! You are so smart, Gomukhasana is so helpful for my tight lumbopelvichip region... thank you, thank you, thank you

  • Rob Westgarth     Sep 7th, 2011
Thanks so much for the awesome class! Loved the descriptions behind the poses too, I'm sure to do this class again! Thanks again :)
  • Marion Rehker     Sep 7th, 2011
Ahhhh...that was yummi. Loved it. It is always so awesome to get more anatomical insight into the why's and how's of the body and movement. Makes the asana make more sense and the little tiny details that make a pose come together so much easier to remember. Thank you Tiffany. Maybe one of these days you could do one on the shoulders.? I'm having issues with especially my right one ever since I have been working on my handstand. Have a blessed day! Namaste.

    Wonderful class!
  • Helene shafer     Sep 7th, 2011
thank you from the bottom of my heart, QL, sacrum, etc. I have bulging discs at L-4 and 5 from old ice skating injuries so I live with chronic back pain and unfortunately some severe flare-ups. It is so hard to stretch and release thru the sacrum, but this practice helped sooo much! I LOOOOOOVED the forward bend with hands to calves, that action of pressing calves into hands and lifting sacrum allowed me to lengthen out of the pelvis for the first time in a long time. my back feels fab!
