@Bethany - Thanks for your message. And, yes, it can be difficult to grow classes in smaller locations, but, I think that you may also find greater retention of students over time in these regions so hang in there!

I feel grateful that I came across this article, especially on a day when I'm feeling discouraged. After just 2 1/2 months of teaching, your points hit home. It's refreshing to know that my feelings are not out of the ordinary considering the stage I'm at. Also, I live in a small town and though many people TALK about being interested in yoga, the audience is not what I had hoped for. I'm telling myself to be patient and not to throw the towel in too soon. Thank you Jason!

@Zip: Yes, be patient with yourself. Teaching is challenging and it takes plenty of time to get the hang of. Thanks for coming to my workshops in Manilla next January!

Wow... Thank you for this! As a new teacher I'm going through all of these right now: feeling very raw & exposed (since I'm an introvert too), making many many mistakes, practicing less & definitely feeling its effect on my teaching... And I have to admit I do feel lost at times :(.
But after reading this, I'll take your advice and learn to be more accommodating with myself. And just enjoy the journey because it really is a great one. :)

p.s. I'll be going to your class next year here in Manila :)

I recently attended a workshop taught by Kathryn Budig called "Kick up your feet". The workshop focused on arm balances. Although I can do some arm balances fairly well, I have to admit I was nervous even after 8 years of practicing yoga. After all, this was Kathryn Budig and she is the queen of arm balances. But she is also very playful and she makes yoga fun, so even though I was focused, I was also relaxed and enjoying myself. When she finally got to crow pose, I was pretty happy because it is one of my two favorite arm balancing poses. As I watched Kathryn demonstrate how to get into the pose, I noticed the things that she does differently from me. When I tried it her way, I was able to get my knees higher on my arms and float higher in the air. Of course, the minute that I realized what was happening, I started to think and I fell out of the pose. But I had been there, just for a moment, and I started to cry. That was my yoga moment and it was perfect.

@Adrienne: You're more than welcome.
@Melissa: I agree. The tips are really intended for all teachers, I just found them most immediately relevant for newbies.
@Sarah: You're welcome. Thank you.
@Richelle: I'm glad that yogaglo's offerings are supporting your teaching!
@Christin: As a self-proclaimed introvert, you should read the book "Quiet." It's beautiful (and, me too... most people don't know this b/c they only see me in a limited context)
@Michelle: Yep, the issues that you are raising can be very challenging. If I think I can do the topic justice I'll tackle it. In the meantime, best of luck.

I am having a blast teaching students. My challenge is with the studio owner and managers! Can you write sometime about that side of teaching? The disfunctional relationships, unkept agreements, broken policies and proceedures?
Thanks

Another gem, Jason. Simple rules, not difficult to follow, but so important to remember. I really like how you remind us to KISS our sequence - keep it short and simple. I notice even some very experienced, well known teachers to this.
I do need to be okay with feeling exposed, I am a huge introvert and teaching yoga takes me out of my need to 'hide myself'. Thanks again! CC

Great tips and ideas for new teachers... and revision for those of us who have been teaching for a while now. I try as best as I can to teach from my heart. To use my experiences off the mat to help me teach. Living in Tulum has helped inspire my teaching because of the challenges I face while living abroad. And I make mistakes all the time... left, right, body parts, word jumbles :-)
Soooo true about practicing more... helps ground me and I learn new sequencings, poses, etc. When I lose my own practice, I notice big time how that starts to effect me and my teaching! Wonderful to have access to yogaglo, you and the other amazing teachers to help keep me on track and inspired.
